Spokane Valley, WA (June 30, 2026) – One East Valley High School senior has died and another remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit following a crash involving a dump truck Tuesday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Officials said 17-year-old boy was pronounced dead following the collision. WSP Trooper confirmed that 17-year-old Sydney D. Stangel remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Troopers reported that Stangel was driving a careastbound on Trent Avenue just east of Sullivan Road around 6:30 a.m. when she attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot. Investigators said the driver failed to yield to an oncoming westbound dump truck driven by 68-year-old man.

Authorities said Johnson’s dump truck struck the Lexus in the westbound lane, resulting in a serious collision. Both teenagers were transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center for emergency treatment. A man as evaluated and released at the scene.

WSP noted that all three individuals involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
