What are the common injuries sustained in an aviation accident?
September 26, 2024 – Matt Albrecht
Aviation accidents can lead to a variety of severe injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are common and often occur due to head trauma during a crash or due to sudden changes in speed or pressure. Spinal cord injuries may also occur due to the impact of a crash, potentially leading to paralysis or other long-term disabilities. Broken bones and fractures are frequent, as the force of impact during an aviation accident can cause significant bone injuries.
Burns are another serious risk, especially if the aircraft catches fire or explodes upon impact, leading to potentially life-threatening injuries. Internal injuries are also common, with organs such as the liver, spleen, or kidneys being particularly vulnerable to damage from sudden deceleration or impact.
The psychological impact of experiencing or witnessing an aviation accident can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious condition that may require long-term treatment.
